Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cosmetic Tattooing?

The process of implanting color pigment beneath the surface of the skin to enhance the natural features of the face. This process can be used on the skin, lips and eyelids.

Does it hurt?

Before the procedure begins a topical anesthetic is applied to numb the area. A second topical anesthetic gel is also applied throughout the procedure to ensure you are comfortable. Each client's comfort is a priority and additional anesthetic is available to ensure you're comfortable no matter your sensitivity level. Sensitivity levels can be affected by smoking, present menstrual cycle, or a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia.

How long does it last?

Exposure to the sun can cause fading and discoloration of the pigment over time. Always apply sunscreen to the tattooed area before going outdoors.

Anti-aging creams Retinol products, proactive acne products, and face peel products can also cause fading/discoloration. These products should be kept away from the tattooed area. Inform your esthetician of your tattooed location(s) before any face treatments.

Additionally, laser treatments may darken, lighten, or discolor your pigment - these treatments should be done at your own discretion. Inform your laser technicians of your tattooed areas before any treatments.

How do I prepare for my procedure?

If you have any pictures of the look you would like to achieve, please bring in photos. You may also fill in your eyebrows as you normally would so that your normal shape can be taken into consideration.

Please note, your artist has the right to refuse service if she feels the look you desire is not fitting for your facial shape, completion, or brow structure. Her goal is to create a natural look that that will last and suit you as styles change.

Please avoid blood thinning medications (including: aspirin, niacin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, & fish oil supplements) for a minimum for 72 hours before your procedure.

Please avoid any eyebrow shaping, waxing, threading 24 hours before your appointment. Please come with them shaped as your normally would, but a little stubble is perfectly fine!

Do not consume alcohol the day before your appointment.

Users of Accutane (and equivalent medications) MUST WAIT AT LEAST 1 YEAR from the last date of use before EVERY session. NO EXCEPTIONS.

All Retinol, RetinA, Retinoid users (anywhere on the face) must stop use 4 weeks before your session. NO EXCEPTIONS.

If you have a vacation planned, your artist recommends that your trip be planned at least 14 days after your procedure and direct sunlight be avoided throughout. The sun will significantly fade a new tattoo as well as damage healing skin.

It is recommended that sun and tanning bed exposure should be avoided for 14 days before your procedure as well as between your initial & follow up sessions (6-8 weeks).

Aftercare & Downtime

The aftercare instructions provided have been refined over years of study to help your tattoo heal as crisp and defined as possible.

Failure to follow your aftercare instructions can result in an unsatisfactory tattoo. Kristina will provide you with an aftercare kit and will review aftercare instructions during your appointment. She will answer any questions and provide a copy of instructions for you to take home.

Most normal activities can be resumed immediately, but it is recommended that heavy exercise and/or sweat inducing activities be delayed for 3 days (preferable 1 week). The salt in your sweat WILL damage your retention the first week.

Absolutely NO SALT WATER on your eyebrows for 2 weeks following your session.

The sun drastically affects your tattoo. Fading is quickened with sun exposure and can cause color change. It is recommended that you sunscreen your eyebrows daily once healed.

Healing Stages

**Time frames may differ for each client

Day 1-2
The tattoo will appear dark and more bold. Don’t be concerned that your eyebrows may initially appear darker and heavier in size than you desire, this is all part of the process.
You may experience some swelling – this is normal.
The treated area may feel similar to a sunburn.

Day 3-5
Eyebrows will start to itch and will appear a bit thicker in texture. Natural exfoliation begins.
Do not pick or scratch the tattooed area.

Day 5-7
The skin begins to flake, peeling from the outside edges first.
Do not pull off any flaking yourself.

Day 7-10
The tattoo finishes flaking and the color underneath appears softer and  less visible for a few weeks. Color will slowly reappear during weeks 3-6 of healing.

FACTS ABOUT THE HEALING PROCESS:
After  the pigment is implanted, the body needs to do its job and repair itself. Tiny flakes of excess pigment will form on top of the skin. The pigment underneath the skin will be retained. When the flaking finishes,  the skin underneath may look light and milky leaving you to wonder where your tattoo went. Please keep in mind this is normal and as the cells regenerate, the color will start to reappear.

When is it time for a Color Boost?

Maintaining the integrity of your skin overtime is important. The longer you wait between color boosts, the crisper and better your artwork will look each time.

Cosmetic Esthetics recommends waiting as long as your can between color boosts, ideally a minimum of 2 years for most skin types. This will allow your body to break down  the pigment particles appropriately in order to make room for new color, as well as keep your skin healthy and clear of scar tissue over the  years.
